The initial psychiatric evaluation generally lasts up to an hour and a half.

For children and adolescents, approximately the first 30 minutes of the appointment will be with the parents alone to review the patient’s complete medical history, psychiatric history, developmental history, educational history, social history and family history. If your child can not be left alone unsupervised in the waiting room or the play area, then an adult will need to be present to watch the child while the parents/guardians are being interviewed. Please do not bring other siblings/children to the initial appointment.  The next 20 minutes of the appointment will consist of an interview with the child/adolescent.  The last 15-20 minutes will consist of a meeting with both the parents and the child/adolescent to discuss diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations.

Treatment recommendation could include medications, therapeutic interventions and/or psychological testing. Please note in some circumstances multiple appointments may be needed to gather enough information to make an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
